Raised platforms were often erected to allow viewer to be within the clouds of blossoms. The subject of countless poems and paintings, Hanami is one of Japan's most anticipated and beloved traditions. Hanami has a been a constant thread through Japanese history and is still hugely popular to this day, as much for the social gatherings, food and drink as for the beauty of the blossoms.
