A Japanese cotton horse trapping, umakake, with dramatic indigo stripe design. The trappings used to secure padding and saddle underlayments, the decorative nature of the trappings possibly indicating it was intended for use during festivals or other ceremonial occasion. 
Edo Period (1600-1868)
10½” diameter x 2” wide when rolled
