A Japanese six panel screen depicting sparrows on a gold leaf (kinpaku) ground. The sparrows caught by the artist in flight and gathering on the ground. The sparrow (suzume) is a popular bird in Japanese art. Often depicted in groups the sparrow is commonly associated with rice and bamboo. Perhaps originating in sparrows activity around rice fields and the rice harvest where they can be seen looking for stray grains of rice.
