LENS SHAPED TRAY

An unusual Japanese lenticular shaped lacquered wood tobacco tray. The tray carved using bold radiating carved channels, covered in a dark red lacquer, and black lacquer rim. Tobacco, a luxury item in Japan, was often offered to guests in a tobacco set. This unusual shaped tray would have held utensils to smoke including a pipe, fire chopsticks, pipe holder and hibachi to light the pipe. The tray with losses and wear from use and age. The flat black lacquered base showing the kiri (paulownia) wood grain.
