YABURE TSUBO

An early Japanese Tokoname storage jar (yabure tsubo) collapsed, torn and mis-formed from a mis-firing or kiln accident during the firing process. Tokoname is a noted kiln site south of Nagoya in central Japan, and considered one of the Six Ancient Kilns. In Japan, unlike the West, ceramic fragments and repaired pieces are highly valued and often prized possessions of tea masters, potters and flower artists. The jar with natural ash glaze, kiln debris and old repairs.
